TWOFER TUESDAY

November 19, 2024

James Thomas Smith goes by the name Jamie XX. A musician, remixer, DJ, and producer. He’s a member of the indie pop ban xx when he’s not collaborating with artists like Gil Scott-Heron, Drake,  Radiohead, Alicia Keys, Florence + The Machine, and Adele, among others.

When attending the Elliott School in London, he and his friends Romy Madley Croft, Oliver Sim, and Baria Qureshi formed xx. The group’s eponymous album, released in 2009, went platinum in the UK. The following year, he began his collaboration with Heron on his last album, I'm New Here. His remixes of two tracks on that record led to a remix album titled, We're New Here, which received widespread critical acclaim.

Keeping busy with other artists didn’t keep him from working on his own projects. The single “Loud Spaces” featured xx bandmate Romy Madley Croft. His first solo album, In Colour, was released in 2015 and was nominated for both a Mercury Prize and Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album. Since then, he’s released a slew of singles and a new album, In Waves, came out in September. Critics have lauded his distinct style, and Pitchfork noted the record is “a well-polished record animated by the ecstatic and easy pleasures of the dancefloor.”
