Michael Olatuja is one such artist. He was born in London, U.K., and is Lagos, Nigeria-raised. Michael Olatuja picked up the bass at age 11 and within a short time was playing professionally. He grew up in a church that sang Yoruba Christian songs and played Yoruba style music. These early influences are what have shaped Michael Olatuja's songwriting and music. His musical influences range from George Benson to bassists, John Patitucci and Richard Bona. He has played with such jazz artists as Terrence Blanchard, Jose James, and Kurt Elling. As well as Shakira, Stevie Wonder, and Bebe Winans. He just released his new album, titled: Lagos Pepper Soup, which he describes as "Cinematic Afrobeat" flavors.
