Massachusetts native and jazz guitarist Mary Halvorson has been performing and recording for well over a decade. After studying at Wesleyan College, she relocated to New York City and also attended the New School.
Quickly digging into the local music scene, she studied with composer/saxophonist Anthony Braxton and joined several incarnations of his bands, from trio up to twelve-piece. She’s also lent her talents to Trevor Dunn Jason Moran, John Zorn, and Marc Ribot, among many others.
Releasing her first recording in 2005, her output has been steady, with several more releases, with the most recent being The Maid with the Flaxen Hair, a duo setting with Bill Frisell. The jazz press has hailed her as “one of the most exciting and original guitarists in jazz—or otherwise” (Steve Dollar, Wall Street Journal), ”NYC’s least-predictable improviser” (Howard Mandel, City Arts), and “a singular talent” (Lloyd Sachs, JazzTimes).
