I've realized in featuring indie artists that I have not focused too much on classical music up til now. This Indie classical cellist really blew me away with several of her songs. Her name is Julia Kent and she was born in Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada. Since then she has been living in New York City and not only plays classical music but also loops it with electronica sounds. Her songs can be haunting and at times ethereal and that combination really gets to your heartstrings. She has been a member of two distinct bands, Rasputina which is a cellist-based band that plays cello rock and indie folk music, and Antony and the Johnsons which plays avant-pop and chamber music.
As a solo artist, she has performed at several festivals around the world including the Meltdown Festival in London, Primavera Sound in Barcelona, Spain, and others. She studied cello at the Indiana University of Bloomington. After graduation, she relocated to NYC and was even
an editor for the weekly now-defunct New York paper, The Village Voice.
She has performed, composed, and recorded several albums and last year released her latest, Temporal. She has also composed music for film, theater, and dance. Julia Kent is also a session musician and has played with many artists in different music genres. Check out this super-talented cellist and support independent music worldwide. Happy listening!
