Cultures combine in the music of singer/songwriter Joy Crookes who is a Londoner with an Irish and Bengali background. She even goes so far as to pay tribute to Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, fortune and prosperity, in her video for “Don’t Let Me Down.”
Growing up, she listened to music as diverse as Nick Cave, Kendrick Lamar, and Gregory Isaac, among others. She’s released two EPs in her short yet burgeoning career: Influence in 2017 and her latest, Reminiscence, earlier this year. In its review of the latter, The Guardian, which has dubbed her “one to watch,” described Joy as “a soulful storyteller with a beguiling, timeless sound.”
