Jaimie Branch

Trumpeter Jaimie Branch was born in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, but her family relocated to Chicago when she was young. By that time the move, she had already spent years working on her craft, having started on the trumpet at the age of nine. After studying music in Boston and Baltimore, she returned to New York and began to meet other jazz musicians with whom she would eventually collaborate, including drummer Jason Nazary. With Nazary, Branch performs in a duo dubbed Anteloper. She also leads her own trio

For her debut, Fly or Die, she brought in some of her Chicago cohorts and recorded some tracks at Le Poisson Rouge in the West Village. Featured on the record are guitarist Matt Schneider, Tomeka Reid on cello, cornet players Ben Lamar Gay and Josh Berman, bassist Jason Ajemian, and drummer Chad Taylor. The Village Voice praised Fly or Die as “overdue debut album” and praised its “challenges and thrills” and noted “Jaimie Branch is soaring.”
