Native New Yorker Camille Thurman is a multi-instrumentalist and singer who is Down Beat’s 2019 Rising Star. Just 15 when she received a saxophone as a gift, she would sing or scat solos to later play on the instrument. She hadn’t thought of herself as a singer as well until and instructor a jazz camp made note, "Is it possible to instrumentalists to sing and scat? Because we think we have one among us."
An artist who sings and plays saxophone, as well as bass, clarinet, flute, and piccolo, is sure to be in demand, and Thurman certainly is. She’s performed with Dianne Reeves, Wynton Marsalis, Patti LaBelle, Terri Lynn Carrington, Roy Haynes and a long list of other musical luminaries. She’s won accolades from not only Down Beat, but NPR, the New York Times, and more, even earning the 2019 Independent Music Awards for Vocal Jazz Album for her third album Waiting for the Sunrise,” released in 2018. And she is just getting started.
