Amethyst Kiah is one of my favorite singers these days. Her powerful voice is an effective antidote to the effects-laden vocals so ever present in popular music right now. Her self-described “Southern Gothic” sound lies at the intersection of alt-rock, roots, and folk. On her third album, Still + Bright, she writes about human nature, introspection, and her spiritual journey from the Tennessee church of her youth to a more expansive view of the world. Kiah is also a member of Our Native Daughters and is an accomplished banjo player as well. She’s the kind of artist you selfishly want to keep all to yourself, though you know everyone deserves to hear her.
