California native Jenny Scheinman is an accomplished violinist whose work has spanned many genres for over two decades. She spent many years based in NYC before returning to Humboldt County in CA in 2012.
Her violin has grace albums by a wide array of artists including Lou Reed and Metallica, Ani DiFranco, Bill Frisell, Lucinda Williams, Allison Miler, and Christan McBride. She’s played with Norah Jones, Aretha Franklin, Bono and Bruce Cockburn. Her genre-hopping has included jazz, pop, folk, rock, classical, and avant-garde.
Frisell in particular has been a frequent collaborator, with Scheinman contributing to nine of his albums and he on several of hers. He also appears on her latest album, All Species Parade, an homage to her home on “the Lost Coast.” She pays tribute to the sounds, cultural history and natural diversity. For the project, she enlisted pianist Carmen Staaf, guitarists Frisell, Julian Lage, Nick Cline, bassist Tony Scherr, and drummer Kenny Wollesen. She encouraged the musicians to“ spill over the edges and be their most expansive selves...like the complex understory of a forest,” Glide Magazine praises the “ luxurious textures and comforting harmonics woven by Scheinman in concert with the two guitarists and pianist Schaff.” It’s a compelling listen, and another fascinating chapter in Scheinman’s incredible career.
