THE JAZZ CAFE

by Rosie G.

June 11, 2023

If you haven’t heard of jazz saxophonist Ben Wendel, maybe you may know him as one of the founding members of the jazz group Kneebody. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, this talented musician and composer plays saxophone, bassoon, and piano.

He grew up in California in a musically inclined family. His mother was an opera singer who encouraged him, and by age 5 started playing the piano. He switched instruments at age 10 when he began playing the saxophone. Ben Wendel is an adventurous musician and has played with such artists as hip-hop legend Snoop Dog, Prince, and Latin jazz artists such as Antonio Sanchez and Ignacio Berroa.

His taste in music is eclectic ranging from jazz to hip-hop and classical. He made his debut with the experimental band Kneebody in the early 2000s. He went solo in 2009 with his album, Simple Song. He’s won many awards and released several albums with Kneebody and as a solo artist. He just released his latest, All One with my favorite song on the album, “Wanderers” featuring the amazing Terence Blanchard. He is now on tour so catch him at a venue near you. Support independent music and musicians. Happy listening.
