You may not know their names, but you’ve very likely heard the music that the members of DarWin have made over the years.
Simon Phillips played with 801 (Phil Manzanera and Brian Eno’s 1976 collaboration), Jeff Beck, and Toto. Greg Howe appeared on recordings for Richie Kotzen and Michael Jackson. Bassist Mohini Dey hails from Kalkata, India, and she’s played in groups that range from jazz fusion to funk. Keyboardist Derek Sherinian worked with Alice Cooper, Dream Theatre, Whitesnake, Billy Idol, and Yngwie Malmsteen.
This core group teamed up with bassist Matt Bissonette (Elton John, Joe Satriani, David Lee Roth, Jeff Lynne and Ringo Starr) beginning in 2015 to develop a long term project that has born fruit in the form of several progressive rock concept albums. Origin of Species was released in 2018, telling the story of a post-apocalyptic planet devastated by climate change and nuclear war. The group’s latest, Five Steps on the Sun, features Bissonette on vocals and ranges from jazz rock to prog/metal and even some poppier tunes.
